Chocolaterie Kitty.... this was the chocolate shop of Ian his grandma in the Haarlemmerstraat in Amsterdam. This inspired Ian to also open his own chocolate shop once!
Salomé and Ian came to the concept of Cacao & Spice because Salomé's mom is from the Moluccan Islands, the 'Spice Islands' of the 17th century. Amsterdam used to 'trade' (trade is a big word) spices like nutmeg, clove and black pepper with these islands, which made Amsterdam one of the richest towns in the world in the 17th century.
The Red Light District, where Cacao & Spice is located, is actually the former harbor area of Amsterdam, the place where all the cacao and spices used to arrive in the Netherlands. Sometimes the smell of spices would be so strong that Amsterdam was called 'Spice City'.
To combine chocolate & spices in one shop seemed perfect, but because they both have a passion for people and planet, all chocolates are from transparant trade, single origin and direct trade.... The start of Cacao & Spice!
